Another Reason Why I Love Boston: 4th of July

There's no better place to be on the 4th of July than Boston.  July is pretty awesome here in general - warm sun, cool shade, blue skies, and happy people.  The 4th of July is something special, though.  Each year, thousands (we're talking hundreds of thousands!) of people gather along the Esplanade - a park along the banks of the Charles River - to celebrate.  It's like one gigantic picnic.  Everybody brings their blankets, food, kids, dogs, games....and sets up to spend a glorious day outside.  In the evening, the Boston Pops take the stage and play a free concert.  Only the lucky hard-core revelers get to see them up close, but they set up huge speakers up and down the river so that everyone can enjoy the music.  Then they play the patriotic music that everyone can sing along with, the 1812 Overture, a guest musician or two typically appear, and then, just when your sangria pitcher reaches the bottom, the fireworks begin.  And these are AWESOME fireworks.  Loud and bright and creative - unlike anything I've ever seen.  They really are impressive.  Of course then you get to try to navigate your way home through the throngs of people, but it is truly worth it.
